At Ethical Bean, fairtrade is not a marketing slogan — it’s part and parcel of who they are. Fairtrade Certified coffee is produced and traded through an alternative system to the conventional global coffee market.
Producers are assured a minimum price that is based on the costs of production, not the volatile market price. There is also a Fairtrade premium, which allots additional money to the coffee cooperatives to invest back into their community as they see fit.
About Ethical Bean
In 1999, founders Lloyd Bernhardt and Kim Schachte spent most of a year in Guatemala awaiting the adoption of their daughter. There, they watched and learned about the country and the coffee and the people working to make a living growing something we all enjoy. They believed there was a better, more equitable way to honor these farmers — and Ethical Bean was born.
Ethical Bean is a proud founding Canadian B Corporation — a global group of organizations redefining success in business beyond the bottom line. They only use 100% certified Fairtrade and organic coffee, which ensures our producers are shielded from the volatilities of the coffee market — and that their beans are grown free from harmful pesticides and other chemicals.
Every area of their operation is built to cut down energy use and impact. Their head office is built to the highest LEED standards, their roaster cuts emissions and energy consumption by 80%, and their partnership with Bullfrog Power allows us to run on green, renewable natural gas and biodiesel. Each year they measure our carbon footprint through Climate Smart and lastly offset any remaining emissions with Gold Standard offsets to maintain their carbon neutral commitment. They were also one of the first companies to introduce 100% compostable single serve pods, and your landfills thank us.
