3 reasons why you should switch to green beauty brands

FAIR/SQUARE Blog | 3 reasons why you should switch to green beauty brands

If you walked into a store today, you would probably notice that more and more brands have a green eco-look and promise the use of natural ingredients. Great, eh? What you might not know is that the majority of these beauty brands and products are owned by just a handful of large corporations. Unfortunately, even though these companies like L’Oreal, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever are working on improving their environmental footprint, they can hardly be described as green beauty brands. From the sourcing of their key ingredients to wasteful packaging and animal testing, there are a lot of reasons to avoid products from them.

Luckily for us, there are a lot of alternatives in Canada! When I started out on this journey to set up a fair, vegan and cruelty-free online shop, I had no idea there were that many companies to work with that make sustainable, natural, vegan and cruelty-free beauty products!

Let’s have a closer look, why it’s worth making an informed choice when it comes to your beauty products:

1. Better for you

Green beauty is better for you

You’ve probably heard something about how there is aluminum in a lot of deodorants. And even though you might not know all the details, it just doesn’t sound right, does it? The thing is, there is a whole lot more in your average beauty product that you don’t know about! From chemical substances which effects are unknown to animal-derived ingredients that’ll gross you out once you know what it is, there has to be something better. And there is!

If you choose to go for natural, plant-based beauty products you can be sure there are no harmful substances involved. Moreover, most green beauty brands also use organic ingredients whenever possible. These ingredients have been grown with the same standards as organic food: without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

Also, remember that your skin is your bodies largest organ. Whatever you put on it, eventually goes into your system. And who really wants to “eat” things like parabens and petroleum waxes?

2. Better for our furry friends

Green beauty is better for the animals

The sad truth is that animal testing is still a reality. Who would have thought that would still be a thing in 2017. Thankfully, there is a big movement pushing for cruelty-free beauty products. There’s also official certification: PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies and the Leaping Bunny Certification Program are two great examples

If you choose to go with a company that is cruelty-free certified you not only support them, you support the whole movement and send a strong message. And by choosing vegan or plant-based beauty products, you make sure that no animal has to give anything that rightfully belongs to them. Be it milk, honey or things that are made from animal parts we don’t even want to speak about….

3. Better for the planet

Grren beauty is better for the planet

Last but in this day and age certainly not least, choosing green beauty products is also better for the planet. Many many normal beauty products contain ingredients derived from fossil fuels. And we all know what that’s doing to our planet. Moreover, many of the chemicals and potentially harmful ingredients end up in our groundwater once you wash them off your skin.

Most green beauty brands are also much better in terms of sustainable packaging. They minimize their packaging altogether and use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible.

So what do you think? What are some of the reasons that you switched to a green beauty brand? Or what’s stopping you?
